Considering having piano restoration?
The first question to answer is what is the difference between building a piano and rebuilding a piano?
Answering that question will
help you understand in part why
there is such a variety of people in
Boulder doing
this kind of work.
See the various stages of a fairly extensive piano restoration of a Mason and Hamlin AA, 6'2" grand circa 1907.
The same job can be done to a Steinway, Bosendorfer, Petrof, Kawai, Yamaha, Fazioli, Kohler and Campbell, Henry F Miller,
Baldwin, Seiler, Bluthner and the list goes on and on.
the following are subcategories of piano restoration and rebuilding.
Pin block replacement, soundboard replacement.
Recapping, repining and notching newly capped bridges.
Restringing, repining new pin block and reguilding the cast iron plate.
Refinishing the cabinet and plate.
Action restoration, which can be very involved.
If your are considering asking your piano tuner to rebuild your piano, you need to find out whether or not
he/she qualifies as a competent technician and beyond that has the skills and knowledge to restore your piano.
The term piano tuner implies that he/she primarily tunes pianos and maybe can perform some minor
adjustments and repairs.
The Piano Technicians Guild of America, which is the major support and
qualifying organization for piano services and restoration professionals in,
Boulder, the United States and
abroad,
requires its members to pass a
rigorous examinations; i.e., tuning, technical and written examinations.
Just remember, there is a big difference between tuning your piano and rebuilding it. It takes a great deal of skill
to be a fine piano tuner and a rebuilder, but there is a broader range of factors to consider when you have your
piano rebuilt. After all, if your piano is poorly tuned, you can always have it retuned. On the other hand,
if your piano is poorly rebuilt, it will be much harder to rectify the situation.
